EXPLAINING THE EGO AND WHY
IT DISTORTS OUR VISION, OUR UNDERSTANDING
AND RELATIONSHIP TO OURSELVES
Let us imagine for a moment that our vehicle (not who we are) just our vehicle for this journey of life is a hot air balloon.
As we open our eyes into the world and from within this vehicle, we can see a number of interesting things; people, animals, the scenery around us, the sky, the horizon. For the purpose of this analogy we are going to say that the inside of the balloon, the envelope, is our thinking mind and the fire within is our being, our light. We are going to call this being of light, life; because it powers the balloon.
OUR INNER WORLD – EMPTY – NOT “REAL”
Because what is happening outside, in the outer world, seems more enticing than the powerful being of light within, and because we are not taught otherwise, we focus all of our attention on what is happening in our outer world. The outer world is what we perceive as the “real” world, the world in which we can make things happen.
OUR OUTER WORLD – FULL – “REAL”
When we are young, we experience the ups and the downs of the Journey with little conditioning and judgement. We are naturally connected to our inner being and go towards what makes us feel good and joyful. We are connected to our emotions of love and joy. These positive emotions light our inner fire making the balloon rise up in the air. We also experience how our negative emotions of fear and sadness dim our inner fire and the balloon stays close to the ground. We experience this natural connection to our feelings and are ourselves without apology.
Yet because we are taught that the outer world is the only “real” world, our inner world continues to exist but it does so outside our focus of attention. We increasingly trade that inner guiding system for external approval and worldly pursuits. As we give our attention to this outward focus, we are unconsciously picking up many different influences and thought forms. These thought forms are carried in the balloon by our environment, our family, our education, our religion, the country we live in and our experiences. Unconsciously, we are filling our inner world with thought forms and patterns of how things should and should not be, what we should and should not do. We also fill the balloon with our experiences. We could say that our experiences stain the balloon with different colours, while our learned thought patterns get imprinted on the fabric of our balloon. Very soon we believe to be these patterns of conditioning on the envelope of our balloon and forget our inner being even further.
Because we believe the “real” world to be the outer world, the one that captures all of our attention, we don’t realise that most of what we see on the outside is just a reflection of our vehicle’s conditioned patterns and other people’s conditioned patterns. Unbeknownst to us, we have become our conditioning and thought patterns and have completely disconnected from the deeper reality of our inner being and personal guiding system of feeling good.
This outer perspective gives us a number of misconceptions:
That which we believe to be real about ourselves is not who we are. It is merely a reflection of the conditioned patterns on the fabric of our vehicle.
That which we believe is not real about ourselves, the Being of Light, is real, but we have disconnected and forgotten that reality and in the process we have lost our guiding system. We have lost the connection to that inner life we are, that life which powers our humanity.
Because we are looking outward into the world, with little self-reflection, we believe that in order to change what is in the “real” world, we have to change that outer world, the one we believe is “real” without changing the inner world. Like trying to change the reflection not what is being reflected.
Because we believe in changing the reflection, not what is being reflected, we see little value, if any, in understanding our inner world (the one that we believe isn’t real) and self-reflecting or self-actualizing. Even if we do, what we see is often unclear; even confusing. But because everyone else looks at “reality” this way, we unconsciously follow this established way of operating and sadly miss out on our connection with our inner power and guiding system. Without this recognition of the conditioned self, we have no idea how to un-become everything that isn’t really us. We don’t know how to reconnect with our true self, the one we were meant to be in the first place.
This focus on the outer world and the underlying belief that the outer world is a stand-alone “reality”, with an outer reflection and no inner reality is our illusion. Yet this is how we are taught to look at our world. We are focused on a reflection with no understanding of what came first, the reflection or what is being reflected.
This focus on the outer reflection, with no understanding and recognition of what is being reflected, creates a chasm between the inner and the outer. We are disconnected from the inner reality of who we are and our understanding and vision is flawed and distorted. We have created an illusory outer/outer reality.
To address this imbalance we feel from within ourselves, and often can’t explain, we set off on a journey to re-create an inner/outer completeness we feel we have lost. Unfortunately we do so through the same outer/outer focus that created the imbalance in the first place. The result is more imbalance.
Unbeknown to us we create an outer/outer self, a surface self with a façade and no depth, no connection to our guiding force. This outer/outer self is the ego, the illusion of self. It has little if any connection to the inner self and the depth of that life which makes us who we truly are, is lost. Whichever way the ego looks, its outer/outer focus creates an illusion. This false self, works hard to create a complete version of itself, but all it does is create an outer façade with no inner connection to its true depth of being.
OUTER + OUTER VISION = ILLUSIVE COMPLETENESS OR ILLUSIVE INCOMPLETENESS
Because we are not looking inwards where what is being reflected can be changed, but outwards where we want to change the reflection, we create an illusory incompleteness or completeness called the ego. I also call this illusory self, the Saboteur in my first book “Just Be Yourself” because it keeps us on the merry go round, trapped in this outer/outer surface self, estranged from the depth of the inner self, estranged from our well-being, estranged from who we truly are.
THE REASON THE EGO DOES NOT WORK
OUR INNER WORLD – THE BEING OF LIGHT – NOT “REAL”
We have forgotten who we are and what we came here for. We are disconnected from our inner fire and the power that makes the balloon function. We think the light being within is not real, we fear our own depth and inner world. We are afraid of our own shadow. Our vision is skin deep and we deny the full spectrum of the physical, emotional and spiritual reality; the good and the bad, the right and the wrong, the light and the dark. The natural order of an inner and outer reality is covered up by our optical outer/outer illusion. This disconnection from our inner self separates us from our humanity and guiding system because this outer/outer focus has created a false humanity, one that lacks the natural order and connection to the depth of what makes us human; the being of light within. This outer/outer perspective tricks us into justifying the worst atrocities because we have lost sight of what is real. We are prisoners of an outer/outer focus that makes us believe we can change the reflection, without changing what is being reflected. We have lost touch with our inner being and our natural state of awareness, which talks to us through emotions and feelings, is disregarded. We have become so disconnected from our true nature that we are often unaware of even having emotions and don’t know how to address our inner turmoil. We are lost in the outer/outer world of thinking, estranged from our power and completeness.
CLARITY ON THE INNER AND OUTER REALITY OF OUR TOUGHS
What this website will bring to those readers that are ready for the challenge, is self-knowledge.
It is said that the truth will set us free and it does, but it comes with a price; the courage to observe ourselves objectively so we can see ourselves just as we are. Not as we imagine ourselves to be, not as we wish we could be, not as we pretend to be in front of others, but just as we are. This website is for the alchemists in this world that are brave enough to die to their old optical illusion – the outer/outer illusion – to embrace their actual reflection, the good and the bad, the right and the wrong, the light and the dark. As they undergo this transformation, the opportunity to recognize the old optical illusion as illusion sets them free to remember who they really are, the Being of Light within.
Through the medium of illustrations and analogies, I will help you recognise the illusory self, the one we create through our outer/outer focus. This will allow you to see the contradictions and unnecessary fears that keep you estranged from you inner power and well-being. The more you recognize the outer/outer focus and see it for what it really is, an old paradigm, a distortion, the more you will be able to reconnect to your joy of feeling complete again. You will be reunited with your long lost best friend; yourself.
The other medium being used is the personality typology called the Enneagram. The Enneagram is a unique tool based on ancient sacred wisdom and contemporary psychology. It gives us one of the most powerful and insightful pieces of information into ourselves and the self-defeating patterns of our outer/outer focus. We will uncover the unconscious shackles that disempower us and convince us to build a fake self, a self that wastes its life trying to change a reflection. Such understanding allows us to remember our in-built guiding system so we can be truly ourselves. As we learn about and reconcile ourselves with the inner-outer duality of thoughts, we lose our fear of that duality. We understand why we were afraid and are able to let fear go. In gaining clarity on what is being reflected, we lose our fear of the inner/outer completeness, the good and the bad, the right and the wrong, the light and the dark. We realise duality to be a surface reality, an outer/outer reality. We regain our connection to our inner world. This coming together of the reflection, and what is being reflected reconciles us with ourselves. We realise we need not fear our duality but can use it to create more unity, we are complete again, and realise we always were. This inner reconciliation and awareness is freedom. The freedom and power to understand duality while not being trapped within it. The power to Just Be our true self.
